James May is stalling for time. I mean really stalling. Past the point of painful into we could pull someone out of a retirement home at random who’s never been in front of a camera and constantly needs to stop for direction, slow .

I clearly haven’t been paying attention as a YT’er, do videos have to be longer than a certain length these days? I just produce content
at a length that makes sense (clearly I’m not making mortgage payments via YT).

I thought the rule was to aim over 10 minutes, but I could be wrong.
(I hate video
editing too much to do the YT thing. Also, it seems only moderately less stable than freelancing, and I hate how unpredictable freelancing is.)

YT has being maximizing their profit by reducing ways for content providers to get paid. Which again pay out less. This eliminated short videos on topics smaller in scope from people who do pay their mortgage off the proceeds . 30 minutes investment on obvious content filling pushed viewers and subscribers down.
Road & Track as well as numerous others bid them sayonara. If you read the comments on the May video you’ll see what a surprise it was he posted anything.

That’s what I thought too, but this one from May is a tad over 16 minutes so I figured maybe I missed something.
Oh, I enjoy video editing, it’s sort of soothing. Although I am part of the DeMuro camp that just uses iMovie. Not nearly as impressive as the Adobe stuff, but much quicker.

I had heard that too, just curious what the magic # is? I had heard 10 minutes, but that wouldn’t explain why May was stretching it out.

Anything on YouTube over 3:00 is beyond my internet video attention span.

Can’t specify on that front. The high frequency of Patreon pleas and hawking commercial products on the other hand.

Ever since Google started linking YT to the general google account, I’ve decided I’m done with YT. The lack of privacy is starting to get icky. I’m going to move to mandatory encrypting before GDrive, too.

There are a few videos hours long I have watched. Most of the Erzberg Rodeo were over 2 hours long.

YT is so fucked right now, I turned on ad blocker on all but two channels, because I started getting 2 minute+ ads per video, that were unskippable.

Wow, that trims out LeMans and quite a bit of other good racing too.

That’s a different story — I could do that because I’d dedicate the time to it and have a purpose
. What chaps my hide is all the 8-15 minute videos that could all be done in 2 minutes if not for the sloppy editing and excessive talking and self-promotion (especially DIY videos)

Exactly.

Are you telling me I can skip forced ads without youtube red??
![]() 11/14/2018 at 15:57 |

Yeah, and if you refresh while the ad is playing, it’ll usually skip it or give you one you can skip after 5 seconds.

Didn’t even know he had a channel until now.

I tried using YT without an account for a long time, but the convenience factor finally won me over. Fortunately it’s about the only thing I use my Google account for, so while Google knows about my keen interest in Jeep videos and HISHE, I think I’ve successfully kept most of my other information away from them.
OTOH I really need to go look at the downloadable account data and see what they’ve inferred. I keep forgetting that’s a thing.

I have a personal google account, and a work-issued account managed by google. The two should never cross, but of course google pics which I am at what time somewhat randomly .

Other than YouTube, I never log into my Google account deliberately, but occasionally other Google apps like Maps will get it. I finally turned off location services on Maps as a precaution.
I was a very early Google advocate. Their search engine revolutionized the Internet; the web was practically unusable before they emerged.
Never again.

Yup. Thankfully you can generally scrub to the part you care about.

Sure you’re not thinking of Facebook? I seem to recall something about Facebook needing 10 (or maybe 15) minute long videos for monetization. I remember trying to help David Tracy film some live stuff a while back, a nd the signal kept cutting out so we had to keep restarting.

Maybe I am confusing it with the goofy mandate to do Facebook Lives from a few years ago. IDK.
